The new thing to come out in the treatment of Epileptic seizures is Medical Marijuana. More specifically cannabidiol(CBD), a non-psychoactive compound of cannabis, could potentially be helpful in controlling seizures. That being said please don’t give your kids CBD capsules for seizures or any Medical Marijuana medication without consulting several doctors. This treatment is in it’s infancy when it comes to kids(pun intended) and although many clinical studies have been done it still lacks long term study effects and most of the industry is just starting to come under regulation.
Some new drugs like Epidiolex (a drug derived from cannabidiol or CBD) are being studied. Epidiolex is a purified, 99% oil-based CBD extract from the cannabis plant.
Recently, gold-standard studies (double-blind, placebo-controlled studies) have finished for difficult epilepsies such as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) in children and adults and Dravet syndrome in children. Information from these studies has been presented at major scientific meetings and in press releases by GW Pharmaceuticals.
People who received Epidiolex ranged from 2 to 26 years old with an average age of 11.
All had epilepsy that did not respond to currently available treatments.
During the study, seizures decreased by an average of 54%.
People taking the anti-seizure medication clobazam (Onfi) seemed to have a better response when compared to those that were not on this medication.
Nature Provides us with every thing we need to feed and treat our bodies, It’s unfortunate that we will have to get through decades of bias against Marijuana. In many peoples minds it’s still the stinky drug that junkies do on the street corner. Medical marijuana has come a long ways since the 60’s when it became popularized for recreational use. Now it’s potency has increased dramatically and with new strains coming to the market place every day, people are discovering new treatments. It may take many years to prove to the medical community the full benefits of Cannabinoids to adults and children, and to get treatments to their most desperate patients who have tried everything else with little or no results.
